Bangladesh, i believe, have improved as an outfit and have shown glimpses of good performances in the past. They have successfully chased down targets and won few one day internationals against top one day teams. Even their recent show of scoring 400+ runs chasing in the fourth innings was another glimpse of the talent this team has. Given the fact that the team, played Murali & Mendis well today to chase 147 runs in 23.5 overs is another evidence that these boys can deliver given the right amount of exposure.
Just like other South-Asian cricketing supremos, Bangladesh also has a great potential. Demoting Bangladesh would be injustice, considering the fact they are into the Taylor phase of development[Australian team developed into a better unit under Mark Taylor and became the invincibles under Steve Waugh. And what Ricky did was just the captain of a great side]. I strongly feel they would be a better and more competitive side in the years to come. The lack of interest by sponsors shouldn’t be the criteria to evaluate their future.
It is a comforting fact that Bangladesh has continued to show the glimpses of performance after a major loss of top players to ICL. Warriors and ICL Bangladeshi, the rebel cricketers showed they could perform well, ICL had enough players in it to call it put it on par with the English county. Like many international teams, Bangladesh also has been seriously affected by the ICL storm. Pakistan and Bangaldesh have majorly lost talent to ICL. And not recognizing ICL would lead to serious complications. T20 & the amount of money invested into it should also be checked. Poor nations may loose international players to many such leagues which may pop up in the recent future.
ICL has to be approved. It would be a great post-international career option for cricketers. And cricketers from weaker nations can also use to develop themselves. Even without recognition development continues to happen, just that the current stand of ICC is not letting them represent their nation. Sad.
BCCI’s decision to press for banning ICL and calling for international support is a greedy move. It demonstrates money being their priority number 1.
Ranatunga, ex-SLC chairman was a correct in foreseeing the problems and approving ICL players to play domestic cricket. It was saddening to see him removed from the Sri Lanka Cricket(SLC). I hope to see similar measures by Javed Miandad. He is got the guts to do it. Given the current situation of political & sport ties with India, I am hoping to watch Miandad go against BCCI and support talent to money.
I would seriously detest ICC’s plans to review Bangladesh’s test status. Rather ICC should consider ICL & approving it as an important agenda for cricket’s future. If ICC is going to be all ears for BCCI and not support ICL, the future of many teams seem bleak.
Cricket has to live.
